About Graffiti Dancers

In 1974, a small, modern-based dance company was founded at Northwestern University by a select group of dancers who were looking for more dance options than were currently offered at the school. With a limited budget and nothing but a background spray painted with graffiti, the group produced their very first show and adopted the name Graffiti Dancers.

Over the years, the company has slowly evolved into a much different company than the one started thirty years ago, but the name and the desire for real choreographic and performance opportunities remains largely unchanged. Today, Graffiti Dancers is a sixteen person company that is completely student run. Company members produce, direct, and choreograph their own shows, creating a season that consists of a mainstage production in spring quarter and year-round commitments to charities, fundraisers, and other events on campus. Graffiti's dancing is based primarily in jazz and hip-hop, but because all of the dancers are trained in multiple areas of dance ranging from, and including tap, jazz, ballet, modern and hip-hop, the company prides itself on its versatility.

The various styles and the divers backgrounds of each of the dancers blend together to compliment each other and create a completely unique "graffiti" style of dancing. With each coming year, Graffiti Dancers carries on a tradition of expanding dance opportunities as well as building a reputation for dance as an art form on the Northwestern campus.

Graffiti Dancers is a satellite group of Arts Alliance. Their upcoming show is titled Actions Speak Louder. Look for it in McCormick Auditorium April 1-3, 2010.
