About

The ability to see one's play performed on the stage is an extremely important and beneficial tool for a playwright during the writing process. This is why Vertigo has chosen four plays to be put up throughout the year in a staged reading series. Here's where you come in. We need the feedback of an audience to make this the most beneficial, helpful, and exciting process it can be. We want to know what you think. What was really good? What could be improved?

2009-2010 Reading Series

Fat Woman in Velvet

written and directed by Aaron Riccardi
October 16, 2009 in The Struble | 8:00pm

It is 1997, and fat Joanie wears velvet to her not-fat sister's son's bar-mitzvah at an Arizona Embassy Suites. What Joanie planned as a sisterly reunion quickly sends her reeling in her world of victim memories and too-many fantasies. Thankfully, though, she has her aborted, almost-five-year-old son and a nighttime drifter in a pick-up truck to help her through this long night. They like what she's wearing, and they show her that real things are what matter, so she can she choose between velvet and sisters, and so she just might move on.
